Description
Description
(Schutzstaffel Dienstdolch M33, Ex-Röhm). A rare Allgemeine SS Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to the edges and tip. Acid-etched onto the obverse is an inscription of “MEINE EHRE HEIßT TREUE” (“MY HONOUR IS LOYALTY”). The reverse ricasso bears the partially-legible maker’s mark of the firm of Gottlieb Hammesfahr, Solingen. The erasure of one half of the maker’s mark, and additional softening of the upper portion of the blade, indicate period removal of the Röhm dedication formerly acid-etched onto the reverse. The blade sits securely within a nickel-silver upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom, with an additional distinct number “3” stamped onto the reverse in Roman numerals, indicating Berlin. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of blackened wood which is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse pommel is a silvered and black enameled SS insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. The dagger culminates in a nickel-silver lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, which retains a rounded pommel nut that maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-silver fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat with side rivets, with the latter featuring a ring for the accommodation of a hanger. A functional spring catch situated within the throat firmly holds the dagger in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks to the blade, sporadic loss of scabbard paint, and discolouration to the fixtures consistent with nicotine exposure. This scarce example of a ground-out SS Röhm dagger remains in a near extremely fine condition.
