Japan, Empire. A Cased Order of the Rising Sun, III. Class, Commander

(Kyokujitsu-Shō). Instituted on October 4th, 1875. An extremely well preserved example of this award of very fine craftsmanship, crafted of gilded silver with white enamels in the shape of an eight-pointed star, with clusters of three intermediate rays, all with cleft endings, the obverse centre exhibiting a beautiful glass cabochon in red colour, the reverse presenting a double-sided design, suspended by a green and violet enamel imperial symbol of the Paulownia flowers, with Japanese lettering on the reverse standing for “Order of Merit Decoration'', measuring 55.2 mm (w) x 87.1 mm (l) inclusive of its Paulownia flowers suspension, weighing 64.96 grams.

Accompanied by its boutonniere and presentation case, constructed of glossy bakelite with a functional metal hinge along the exterior that holds the lid to the base, the exterior of the lid embossed with the name of the decoration in gilt, with a functional metal clasp closure, measuring 84 mm (w) x 138 mm (l).
