Description
(宝冠章 Hōkan-shō). Instituted on January 4, 1888 by Emperor Meiji of Japan. A rare decoration of which few were issued, presenting a silver gilt oval medallion with clusters of three green and pink enamelled cherry blossoms forming the four points of a star, the medallion center features a silver gilt ancient Japanese Imperial Crown on a blue enamel background, with a red enamelled surround with finely enamelled stocks and a dual pearl border, centre reverse plain, suspended from a white butterfly suspension with delicate features and plain reverse, the badge measures 48.30 mm (w) x 76.50 mm (h – inclusive of butterfly suspension and integral ring), weighs 33.3 grams (including ribbon), worn on an original yellow and red silk bow ribbon, modern pin on reverse, enamels intact, minimal wear, remains in extremely fine condition.
Contained in its original black lacquer case of issue, bearing characters on the exterior with a purple silk lid and purple velvet medal bed and deep section near the hinges for the bow ribbon, measures 115 mm (w) x 155 mm (l) x 40 mm (d), hinge and clasp functional, very minor wear, in extremely fine condition. This box is held within the original cardboard box, presenting some wear and residue.
The decorations and case are held in a fitted wooden box with images of the set adhered to the exterior lid, stamp on the edge, the wooden box, measures 145 mm (w) x 270 mm (l) x 60 mm (d), minor wear, in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: This Order was established by Emperor Meiji. It is conferred in recognition of notable services. Originally it was awarded to Japanese and foreign women, and occasionally men. Now, it is conferred only upon members of the Imperial Family and foreign ladies of distinction.
