Description
(Dutch: Orde van Leopold II, French: Ordre de Léopold II). Instituted in 1900 by King Leopold II. Type I (1900-1915). In silver, a Maltese cross with ball finials, wreath segments in each quadrant, the obverse medallion features the black enamelled crest of the Congo Free State, surrounded by a blue ring with the motto TRAVAIL ET PROGRES, the reverse medallion bearing the cypher of Leopold II, surmounted by a large hollow crown and suspended by an original ribbon in blue and black silk, measures 38.25 mm (w) x 59.35 mm (h - inclusive of crown suspension), enamels intact, lovely patina, in extremely fine condition.
