Denmark, Kingdom. An Order Of The Dannebrog In Gold, I Class Knight, C.1910

(Dannebrogordenen Ridderkorset). Instituted 12 October 1671 by Christian V. (1906-1912 issue). Finely made in Gold consisting of a Latin Cross with red and white enameled arms, the quadrants of the arms joined by stylized Gold crowns, the obverse with gilt inscription of “GUD OG KONGEN” (“GOD AND THE KING”) with central royal monogram, reverse with royal monograms in the centre and 12 o’clock arm, flanked by dates of “1219” and “1671”, with bottom date of “1808”, suspended from monogram of King Frederick VIII, riveted to Gold crown suspension with loop and period original ribbon, measuring 27.51 mm (w) x 44.83 mm (h) (inclusive of suspension), weighing 14.2 grams, minor flecking of enamels and material fatigue of ribbon, in otherwise near extremely fine condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
