France, III Republic. A National Order of the Legion of Honour, Knight’s Cross with Miniature

(Republique Francaise). Instituted in 1802. An ornate example in silver, with white, blue, and green enamels, five-pointed star surrounded by laurel wreath, each of the arms finished with two finials, obverse centre shows profile of Marianne facing right with inscription “République Francaise 1870”, reverse centrepiece shows flag of France surrounded by blue-enameled ring with the inscription “Honneur et Patrie”, on original red ribbon, inclusive of green-enameled laurel wreath 88.9 mm (h) x 38.8 mm (w), convexed, evidence of centrepieces attached with expanding adhesive, fine condition. Miniature measures 21 mm (h) 13.5 x mm (w), very fine.

Footnote: The award was instituted in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. It is the highest French order of merit and is awarded for eminent service to the nation, civilian or military, in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight. This is the eleventh model created.
