Description
Multi-colour hand-painted portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte (Napoleon I) on an oval plate, artist signed "M Cillig" to the right of his figure, beautifully and exquisitely detailed, housed under glass, within a 70.5 mm (w) x 90.3 mm (h) oval copper-coloured bronze frame exhibiting a unique repeating design pattern, secured within a wooden frame with an oval portion recessed in the middle to accommodate the portrait, the reverse with a paper backer from a publication with the text in French glued in place, a copper ring affixed to the top edge for wall suspension, measuring 126.5 mm (w) x 149.5 mm (h) x 18 mm (d), light wear evident on the front of the frame but the portrait itself remains unaffected. Extremely fine.
Footnote: Napoleon Bonaparte (born Napoleone di Buonaparte; August 15, 1769 - May 5, 1821) was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and led several successful campaigns during the Revolutionary Wars. He was the de facto leader of the French Republic as First Consul from 1799 to 1804. As Napoleon I, he was Emperor of the French from 1804 until 1814 and again in 1815. Napoleon dominated European and global affairs for more than a decade while leading France against a series of coalitions in the Napoleonic Wars. He won most of these wars and the vast majority of his battles, building a large empire that ruled over continental Europe before its final collapse in 1815. He was one of the greatest military commanders in history, and his wars and campaigns are studied in military schools worldwide. Napoleon's political and cultural legacy has endured, and he has been one of the most celebrated and controversial leaders in world history.
