Germany, Imperial. A Lübeck Hanseatic Cross Medal Pair

(Gruppe von zwei kaiserlich-deutsche Medaillen). A pairing of two Imperial German medals, including a Lübeck Hanseatic Cross and an Iron Cross 1939 Second Class.

(Lübeck Hanseatenkreuz). The Lübeck Hanseatic Cross consists of a silver cross Pattée, the obverse with red enamels on all four arms bearing a central gilded enameled medallion overlaid by the Lübeck coat of arms, the reverse bearing a central raised inscription reading “Für Verdienst im Kriege 1914” (For Merit in War 1914), and unmarked example, measuring 40.10 mm (w) x 40.02 mm (l) not including its triple loop configuration for suspension from its period-original ribbon, weighing 19 grams, the cross exhibiting patina from age with three small holes in the ribbon from previous suspension.

(Eisernes Kreuz 1914 II. Klasse). The Iron Cross 1914 Second Class consists of a silver cross Pattée with a blackened magnetic iron core within a ribbed silver frame, the obverse with a central initial “W”, the six o’clock arm with a reinstitution date of “1914”, the twelve o’clock arm with a royal crown, the reverse with three oak leaves, the six o’clock arm with an initial institution date of “1813”, the suspension loop is marked “MFH” for an unknown maker, measuring 42.72 mm (w) x 43.03 mm (h), not including its double loop configuration for suspension from its period-original replacement ribbon, weighing 15.5 grams, exhibiting a pleasant dark patina on the silver frame, and with wear to the black paint from age. The grouping of two Imperial German awards in overall better than very fine condition.
