(Gruppe von zwei Deutschen Medaillen). A pairing of two German awards, consisting of an Iron Cross 1914 Second Class and a War Merit Medal
(Eisernes Kreuz 1914 II. Klasse). The Iron Cross 1914 Second Class consists of a silver cross Pattée with a blackened magnetic iron core within a ribbed silver frame, the obverse with a central initial “W”, the six o’clock arm with a reinstitution date of “1914”, the twelve o’clock arm with a royal crown, the reverse with three oak leaves, the six o’clock arm with an initial institution date of “1813”, the suspension loop is marked “KO” for “Königliches Münzamt Orden, Berlin” (Imperial Mint, Berlin), measuring 42.39 mm (w) x 43.02 mm (l), not including its double loop configuration for suspension from its period-original ribbon, weighing 16.6 grams, exhibiting a pleasant dark patina on the silver frame, and with wear to the black paint from age.
(Kriegsverdienstmedaille). The War Merit Medal is constructed of bronze, the obverse of the circular medal depicting a frontal silhouette of a War Merit Cross, the reverse inscribed “Für Kriegsverdienst 1939” (For Wartime Merit 1939), on a double loop configuration for suspension from its period-original replacement ribbon, measuring 32.45 mm in diameter, weighing 12.9 grams. The grouping of two German awards in overall near very fine condition.
