(Zivil Verdienstorden Ritterkreuz 2. Klasse). Instituted on 7 June 1815 by King Friedrich Augustus 1. Second Model. (Issued 1891-1918). A white enameled Maltese cross with narrow gold edging, in silver, centre obverse presenting a separately applied gilt crowned Saxon coat of arms in coloured enamel, circled with gilt, surrounded by the inscription “FRIED. AUG. K. V. SACHSEN D. 7. JUN. 1815” (FRIEDRICH AUGUST KING OF SAXONY, 7 JUNE 1815) over white enamel and a thin gilt border, reverse centre medallion contains the four-line inscription “FÜR VERDIENST UND TREUE” (“FOR MERIT AND FAITH”) over white enamel and a golden border, the outer ring contains a green and red-enamelled oak leaf wreath over a white enamel background and golden border, in the margin of the lower cross arm is the maker’s mark “S,” measuring 35.16 mm (w) x 37.39 mm, on loop suspension from period original green-and-white ribbon, extremely fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
