Saxony, Kingdom. An Albert Order, I Class Knight With Crown, By Scharffenberg, C.1900

(Albrechtsorden Ritterkreuz, I. Klasse). Instituted 31 December 1850 by Frederick Augustus II of Saxony. (1903-1918 issue). A Latin cross constructed of silver gilt, with white enameled arms, with a green enameled wreath through the quadrants of the cross, the obverse with a central white enameled medallion bearing the leftward facing bust of Albert III in gilt, surrounded by a blue enameled ring inscribed ALBERTUS ANIMOSUS (ALBERT THE MERCIFUL), the reverse with a crowned royal coat of arms in gilt, surrounded by a blue enameled ring, dated “1850”, along with arabesques, marked on 6 o'clock arm with "S" denoting maker Scharffenberg, on a loop for suspension from its period correct replacement ribbon, measuring 38.11 mm (w) x 56.96 mm (h) (inclusive of crown suspension), weighing 27.3 grams (inclusive of ribbon), minor flecking of enamels, otherwise in near extremely fine condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
