Description
(Grenztruppen der DDR Uniform für Oberst). An extremely complete East German Border Troops Oberst dress uniform, consisting of a tunic, dress shirt, trousers, and visor cap.
The tunic is constructed of grey whipcord wool and features a collar which transitions into double breast flaps. The collar is trimmed along the outer edge with green wool piping and is flanked on each side by tabs. The former are each constructed of dark grey wool bases with buckram cores and bear dual machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire insignia, in turn each bisected by green threaded bands. The tabs both measure 45 mm (w) x 75 mm (l). Each shoulder is adorned by a board constructed of cardboard-reinforced green wool, bearing four bands of silver aluminum wire piping, and pinned with three gilded bronze rank pips. The boards each measure 40 mm (w) x 105 mm (l) and are held in place by a pebbled magnetic metal button on the inner edge and with a reverse strap meeting an integrated loop set into the tunic on the outer edge. Stitched onto the left cuff is a title constructed of green wool and bearing a machine-embroidered silver-grey inscription of “GRENZTRUPPEN DER DDR” (“BORDER TROOPS OF THE GDR”), within dual tresses of identical construction. The cuff of each sleeve is also rolled up to a depth of 120 mm, secured in place with machine stitching, and trimmed with green piping. Each breast flap features two pockets, all opening with stylized horizontal flaps with reinforced buttonholes meeting pebbled magnetic metal buttons. Affixed to the right breast flap is an array of decorations and badges, which include a NVA Academy graduation badge; a Border Troops Merit Clasp, a Free German Youth badge, a German-Soviet Friendship badge; a Border Troops “Military Best Badge”, a Border Troops Merit Badge, and a DDR Sports Badge in Gold. Fastened to the left flap are medal bars, constructed of gilded bronze with transparent plastic faces, featuring 14 decorations. The tunic closes with four pebbled magnetic metal buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap. A grey rayon interior fully encompasses the interior, and features a single pocket set into the upper left breast flap. A NVA depot stamp is set onto the liner just above the pocket, while the collar also features a white cotton label bearing an inscription of “g 52-1”. An integrated grey cotton-blended strap is set onto the left side of the interior and completes in a magnetic metal loop. The tunic measures approximately 470 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 645 mm, and an overall body length of 760. It is in an overall extremely fine condition.
The dress shirt is constructed of light grey cotton and features a reinforced collar. Each sleeve has a vertical slit with a single bakelite button meeting dual buttonholes for an adjustable fit. It closes with six bakelite buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap. It is accompanied by an original NVA-issue slate grey cotton tie.
