Germany, Wehrmacht. A 1939 Iron Cross I Class, Cloth Version, Certified by Dietrich Maerz

(Eisernes Kreuz 1939 I. Klasse, Stoffausführung). Reinstituted 1 September 1939. (1939-1945 issue). Constructed of black and grey wool with silver aluminum wire, consisting of a Cross Pattée, the obverse featuring a machine-embroidered silver-aluminum wire frame frame with ribbing executed in a pebbled format, with a dark grey wool core, the six o’clock arm with a date of “1939” similarly constructed of silver aluminum wire, with a central black wool swastika highlighted with silver aluminum wire borders, the reverse partially retaining a black wax paper liner, unmarked, measuring 49 mm (w) x 49 mm (h), a superb example of a cloth version in extremely fine condition.
