Germany, Wehrmacht. A Spanish Cross with Swords, Silver Grade, c. 1940

(Spanien Kreuz). Instituted April 14th, 1939. An extremely well preserved and scarce Spanish Cross in Silver with Swords, constructed of .900 purity silver, consisting of a Maltese Cross with a central roundel wearing a mobile swastika, along with Luftwaffe eagles clutching a mobile swastika and swords in the quadrants between the arms of the cross, the reverse is plain with a barrel hinge, banjo-style vertical pinback, and broad rightward-opening catch, marked “.900” on the reverse for silver content, measuring 55.4 mm (w) x 55.6 mm (l), weighing 32.38 grams, with dark and even patina on the arms of the cross from age and wear, in extremely fine condition.
