Description
Description
(SS Dienstdolch M36). A very well-preserved SS Model 1936 Chained Service Dagger, measuring 37.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the tip and edges. Acid-etched onto the obverse of the blade is an inscription of “MEINE EHRE HEIßT TREUE” (“MY HONOUR IS LOYALTY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso is marked with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M7/1” for Gebrüder Christians, Solingen, above a matching RZM date code. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated alloy upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of lacquered black wood, carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse ricasso is a blackened and silvered SS insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. It completes with a nickel-plated lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, secured in place with a rounded pommel nut that screws in to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. Wrapped around the handle is a matching portepee, consisting of a stylized silver aluminum wire acorn suspended from a cord of identical construction. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft with polished metal fixtures secured to the tip, mid-section, and throat. Emanating from the latter two are integral loops which retain a multi-link magnetic metal chain, with three of the links bearing raised Totenkopfs and three bearing raised double Sig runes. Stamped onto the reverse of one of the runic links is an SS proof mark. The chains connect to a knotted swastika situated above a functional spring clip. Situated within the scabbard’s throat is a functional spring catch which firmly holds the dagger in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include running marks and slight pitting to the blade, some scratching of the nickel plated features, and sporadic scratching of the scabbard paint. This scarce dagger remains in an overall near extremely fine condition.
