Description
Description
(Heer Extraseitengewehr mit Klingenätzung). An unusual and well-preserved Heer commemorative service bayonet, measuring 35 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 19.5 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the tip and lower edge. A narrow fuller runs the majority of the length of the upper edge of each side, which also features a serrated edge. Acid-etched onto the obverse is an inscription of “ZUR ERINNERUNG AN MEINE DIENSTZEIT” (“IN MEMORY OF MY SERVICE TIME”), flanked on each side by oak leaf clusters and Heer-style German national eagles clutching mobile swastikas. The obverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “F.W. HÖLLER, SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s classic thermometer logo which is marked with 17 ticks. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated zink alloy hilt, which features a hooked quillon and pommel, with an intact blackened leather buffer pad covering the seam. A hollow insertion slot set into the pommel retains both a red wool insert and functional push-button spring release. Two pieces of dark brown ersatz wood compose the handle grip, and are fastened in position with dual flattened studs. Accompanying the bayonet is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft for the accommodation of a frog. The remnants of the former are partially retained and secured in place with electrical tape. A functional spring catch situated within the throat firmly holds the bayonet in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include running marks to the blade with additional evidence of minor cleaning and sharpening, some loss of nickel plating to the hilt, minor loss of scabbard paint, and the aforementioned deterioration of the frog. This unusual example remains in a better than very fine condition.
