Description
(Bajonette). A mixed lot of bayonets, including:
1. A well-preserved Heer dress bayonet, measuring 40 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 20 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge. Narrow fullers run approximately two-thirds of the length of the top edge of both sides of the blade. The reverse ricasso bears a mark of “E. PACK & SÖHNE, SOLINGEN”, topped by the firm’s classic blacksmith logo. The blades sits securely within a nickel-plated alloy hilt with a hook quillon, and with an intact brown leather buffer pad covering the seam. The pommel features a hollow insertion slot retaining an original green wool insert and functional push-button spring release. Two pieces of pebbled black bakelite compose the handle grip, and are secure in place with dual magnetic metal rivets. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a blackened magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft near the throat for the accommodation of a frog. The throat retains a functional spring catch to firmly hold the bayonet in place during storage, held in place by a single side rivet. The bayonet demonstrates minor issues consistent with age and wear, including some running marls to the blade and minor loss of scabbard paint. It remains in an overall extremely fine condition.
2. A well-preserved K98 combat bayonet, measuring 41 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 25 cm-long magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge. Retaining most of its original blueing, the blade has wide fullers running the majority of the length of the top edge of each side. The obverse of the ricasso is stamped with a serial number of “3284”, while the reverse is stamped with the maker’s mark of Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie, Solingen. The blade sits securely within a blued magnetic metal hilt, with a hollow insertion slot set into the pommel, itself retaining a functional push-button spring release. Two pieces of ribbed dark brown wood compose the handle grip, and are secured together with dual magnetic metal rivets. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a blued magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft directly below the throat for the inclusion of a frog. The former is included and constructed of multiple panels of blackened leather. A functional spring catch within the throat firmly holds the bayonet in place during storage, and is fastened in place with a single side rivet. A matching serial number of “3284” is stamped onto the side of the shaft along the rim of the throat. Minor issues consistent with age and field use are evident, and include some running marks to the blade, a small chip to the obverse of the handle, and minor material fatigue of the leather frog. It remains in an overall near extremely fine condition.
3. A second well-preserved K98 combat bayonet, measuring 41 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 25 cm-long magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge. Retaining most of its original blueing, the blade has wide fullers running the majority of the length of the top edge of each side. The obverse of the ricasso is stamped with a serial number of “5700”, while the reverse is stamped with a maker’s mark of “E. U. F. HÖRSTER” for the renowned Solingen-based edged weapons manufacturer. The blade sits securely within a blued magnetic metal hilt, with a hollow insertion slot set into the pommel, itself retaining a functional push-button spring release. Two pieces of dark brown wood compose the handle grip, and are secured together with dual magnetic metal rivets. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a blued magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft directly below the throat for the inclusion of a frog, while a functional spring catch within the throat firmly holds the bayonet in place during storage, and is fastened in place with a single side rivet. Stamped onto the side of the shaft along the rim of the throat is a mis-matched serial number of “42ASW”. Minor issues consistent with age and field use are evident, and including some running marks to the blade, slight surface oxidation of the metal fixtures, and sporadic denting to the scabbard shaft. It remains in an overall better than very fine condition.
