Germany, Wehrmacht. A Private Wartime Photo Album to a Gebirgsjäger on the Eastern Front

(Gebirgsjäger Fotoalbum). A superb private wartime photo album from the estate of a Heer Gebirgsjäger who saw extensive service in Norway, Finland, and the Soviet Union, constructed of a card stock binding, the cover bearing a raised 1939 Iron Cross executed with a blackened and silvered finish, the spine bearing a silvered inscription of “WEHRMACHT-FOTOALBUM” and perforated with four holes reinforced with magnetic metal grommets, with an original drawstring looped through the eyelets to maintain the album’s structural integrity, the interior content consisting of 34 paper stock and black card stock pagers, pasted with 179 black-and-white private and unit mass-produced images, the latter opening the album and encompassing striking shots of Norway, including scenes of fjords and winter landscapes, some featuring locals and Sami in traditional dress, transitioning a large number of private images featuring Heer Gebirgsjäger personnel departing Germany for Scandinavia, appearing to pass through occupied Denmark before arriving in Norway, with images of uniformed troops on occupation duty, participating in building projects, in the field, and at leisure, notably showing many veterans of the Battles of Narvik wearing the Narvik Shield (among other decorations), complemented by studio portraits of the owner in uniform and with family, also accompanied by six period postcards and two reproduction photos showing noted Mountain Troops Generals Eduard Dietl and Franz Böhme in uniform, the album measuring 20.5 cm (w) x 24.5 cm (h), a superb look at a Gebirgsjäger’s wartime experiences in extremely fine condition.
