Description
(Heer Stahlhelm M40). A Heer M40 Stahlhelm, constructed of a magnetic molybdenum steel shell. The exterior retains visible remnants of its original apple-green paint, overlaid by irregular patches of light green and white paint added post-manufacture, in a possible attempt by the owner to facilitate camouflage in evolving battlefield conditions. It is flanked on each side by an integral ventilation hole, while three rivets are distributed around the outer circumference for the accommodation of the interior fixtures. The rim is fully crimped, providing a smooth edge. A metal ring surrounds the interior of the shell and secures in place a brown leather line which culminates in eight fingers, each perforated with five ventilation holes and an additional hole through which is looped a period drawstring. Two magnetic metal loops descend from the ring and retaining a period original two-piece leather chinstrap, fastening with a function magnetic metal buckle. The skirt is stamped with a code of “HKP64”, indicating manufacture by Sächsische Emaillier- und Stanzwerk, with shell size of 64, and a heat code of “1417”. The visor skirt additionally bears a hand-etched owner’s surname of “KÖSTER”. Measuring approximately 23 cm (w) x 28.5 cm (l) x 14 cm (h). In addition to the modified paint, the helmet demonstrates further issues consistent with age and wear, including some denting to the shell, material fatigue and desiccation of the leather elements, and possible refurbishment of the liner or its fittings. This interesting example remains in a very fine condition.
