3. A large collection of correspondence to Kreuz, including telegraph notices of awards bestowed, rule and provision documents for those awards, travel passes, personal letters, personnel files, and calling cards, in overall extremely fine condition.
4. A fascinating and largely razor-sharp collection of 14 private photographs from the interwar and Second World War period, featuring several studio portraits of Kreuz in both a Heer Officer’s uniform as well as a white doctor’s coat, notably supplemented by images of Kreuz performing or leading surgeries and autopsies during the interwar and wartime period, the latter featuring professionally-enlarged depictions of surgeries being performed, in overall extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Lothar Kreuz was born on 9 September 1888 in Berlin. He studied at both Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität and the Friedrichs-Universität Halle before entering military service as a newly-qualified doctor on 2 August 1914, on the eve of the First World War. He served as a physician with various reserve units before joining the staff of the famous Charité Hospital in Berlin, qualifying as a specialist in orthopedics, later becoming a professor. He joined both the NSDAP and the SS in 1933, and was a notable purge in the 30 June 1934 purge of the Sturmabteilung (SA) leadership as part of the Knight of the Long Knives. He later worked in various professorships and researched anatomical disorders, before re-entering military services as a specialist in limb injuries and prosthetics during the Second World War. He received a number of decorations for his services, most notably the Knight’s Cross of the War Merit Cross, and was a later advisor to infamous SS physician and war criminal Karl Brandt. Kreuz was arrested by US occupation authorities and held in detention from June 1945 until 1947. He was later declared fuller exonerated by an Allied tribunal in 1948. The same year, he resumed his career as an orthopedic surgeon and worked as a physician and supervisor of the orthopedic department at the University of Tübingen in Stuttgart. He retired in 1964 and died on 24 January 1969 in the same city.
