Germany, Ordnungspolizei. An Officer’s Sword, by Clemen & Jung

(Polizei Degen für Führer). A well-preserved Ordnungspolizei Officer’s sword, measuring 100 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features an 85 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to the edges and tip, and with fullers which run approximately half the length of each side of the blade. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “CLEMEN & JUNG, SOLINGEN”, situated above the firm’s classic shield logo. The blade sits securely within a multi-piece hilt, with the seam covered by an intact blackened leather buffer pad. The hilt features a nickel-plated magnetic metal hand guard and quillon, with a handle grip consisting of ribbed and black painted wood. The ribbing retains an original wire cord, indicating Officer issue. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a bronze Ordnungspolizei insignia consisting of an oval oak leaf wreath, overlaid by a German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 25 mm (h). Accompanying the sword is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-plated magnetic fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat, while an integral band situated just below the throat retains a ring for the accommodation of a hanger. A functional spring catch situated within the throat securely holds the sword in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include running marks to the blade, sporadic loss of nickel plating to the hilt with minor chipping and scratching of the handle, some loss of paint to the scabbard, and the loss of functionality to the scabbard’s throat catch. The sword remains in an overall very fine condition.
