Instituted in 1868. In 18k Gold and enamels, white enameled cross with knots in each corner, the obverse center features a blue enameled field with a Lombardy crown with red, green and white enamel details, surrounded by a gold ring, the reverse medallion features a black enameled eagle with a red and white enameled shield on its chest, surrounded by a gold ring, on original neck ribbon divided into three bands of red-white-red, 20.5 grams, 55 mm (h) x 51.4 mm (w), enamels intact, staining evident on neck ribbon, extremely fine condition. Housed in the original case of issue, exterior stamped with monogram of Victor Emmanuel, interior stamped RAVIOLO & GARDINO SUCCESSORI D. CRAVANZOLA GIOIELLIERI ROMA, very fine condition.
Footnote: The Order of the Crown of Italy was founded by Victor Emmanuel II in 1868 to commemorate the unification of Italy in 1861. It was the first national Order instituted after the unification of the Kingdom of Italy. It was awarded in five degrees for civilian and military merit. The order has been suppressed by law since the foundation of the Republic in 1946.
