Luxembourg, Kingdom. An Order Of Oak Crown, I Class Grand Cross Star, C.1880

(Eechelaafkrounenuerden). Instituted on December 29, 1841. Type II. 1858-Present issue. A highly detailed eight pointed star in silver, each arm composed by cluster of nine rounded rays, obverse depicting a superposed Gold monogram of William with a well executed enameled green background, surrounded by an enameled red border inscribed JE MAINTIENDRAI (I will Maintain), encircled by a large detailed green enamel oak wreath with elegant bow tie in Gold, reverse with central pin assembly, marked twice by Dutch hallmark denoting .833 silver fineness between 1814-1905, together with unknown maker’s mark B O, measuring 78.88 mm (w) x 79.40 mm (h), with finely toned silver with loss of red enamel as well as green enamel on laurels, remains fair/good.

Footnote: The Order of the Oak Crown was established by Wilhelm II King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg on December 29, 1841. It is the oldest Order in Luxembourg. It is conferred upon civilians and military personnel of Luxembourg, as well as foreigners, who performed outstanding services and who made outstanding achievements.
