(Ordre van Oranje-Nassau). Instituted in 1892. Grand Cross Badge: in silver gilt with white, blue and green enamels, hallmarked with a sword and marked "925S" (silver) on the pin, measuring 56.7 mm (w) x 88 mm (h) inclusive of its crown suspension, on its original full-length sash with decorative moiré and large bow-tie; and Breast Star: multi-piece construction, insignia in silver gilt with white and blue enamels, mounted to an eight-pointed star base, each star point with five emanating rays, with a single emanating ray between each star point, maker marked " 'sRIJKSMUNT UTRECHT" on the reverse cartouche, measuring 85 mm x 85.5 mm, vertical pinback flanked by dual prongs. Both items with intact enamels, extremely fine. In their hardshelled case of issue, dark green dimpled exterior, inside lid in white satin and padded, base with a platform in orangy-yellow felt and housing a recessed medal bed for the Breast Star, measuring 135 mm (w) x 285 mm (h) x 55 mm (d), scuffing evident on all sides of the exterior, case very fine.
Footnote: The Order of Orange-Nassau was instituted on April 4, 1892 by the Queen Dowager Emma. It is awarded to Dutchmen and foreigners who have proved themselves to be specially deserving towards the Head of State or society in general, in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight, in Civil and Military Divisions plus three Medals. In 1994, the Medals were abolished and replaced by the class of Member, which may only be awarded to citizens of The Netherlands.
