(Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique). Instituted in 1960. Four-piece construction, insignia in silver gilt with red, white and black enamels, centered upon a nine-pointed silver star base, each star point with a central peak and incorporating two ribs butting the insignia, all of which is mounted to a nine-pointed silver exploding star convex base, each star point with nine emanating rays, with a single point between each star point and supporting the aforementioned nine-pointed star above, maker marked "FREDERICO COSTA Lda / CONDECORAÇÕES / LISBOA / R.S. JULIAO 110 3o" on the reverse cartouche, measuring 76.8 mm (w) x 75 mm (h), vertical pinback, intact enamels, very light contact, near extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Prince Henry the Navigator was instituted on June 2, 1960. It is an order of knighthood, created to commemorate the quincentenary of the death of the Portuguese prince Henry the Navigator, one of the main initiators of the Age of Discovery. Minor reforms of the constitution of the Order occurred in 1962 and 1980. It is a five-tier order, whose titles are awarded to individuals and institutions for outstanding contributions to Portugal and for services in the expansion of Portuguese culture, its history and its values (with a particular focus on its maritime history). It is awarded in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight. The number of members in each grade is restricted by its constitution, and titles are conferred by special decree by the Grand Master of the Order, i.e., the President of Portugal.
