(Орден Святого апостола Андрея Первозванного, Звезда ордена). Instituted 28
November 1698 by Tsar Peter I. Constructed of silver with gilt and multi-coloured
enamels, the obverse consisting of an eight-pointed radiant star with ribbed rays,
bearing a central red enameled medallion overlaid by a blue enameled Cross of Saint
Andrew, with gilt Latin script initials “S.A.P.R.” joining the quadrants for Sanctus
Andreas Patronus Russiae (Saint Andrew, Patron of Russia”), situated within a blue
enameled ring bearing a raised and gilt inscription of “ЗА ВѢРУ И ВѢРНОСТ” (“FOR
FAITH AND AND LOYALTY”), bordered by ribbed rings along both the inner and outer
edges, the reverse soldered with seven eyelets for sew-on attachment, unmarked but
demonstrating the characteristics of European manufacture, measuring 90.24 mm (w) x
90.84 mm (h), weighing 58.0 grams, most of the gilt finish has been lost, some flecking
is visible to the enamels, and one of the reverse eyelets has been lost, a rare example
in near extremely fine condition.
