Instituted in 1883. Type II (1921-1941). Badge: Maltese cross in blue and white enamel, each of the arms finished with two ball finials, Serbian double-eagles with shields in each corner, obverse oval centerpiece shows iconography of St. Sava surrounded by inscription in blue enamel, reverse oval centerpiece shows date 1883 within a blue enameled outer circlet decorated with golden laurel wreath, inclusive of crown suspension 85.6 mm (h) x 52.3 mm (w), includes original striped necklet ribbon, near mint condition.
Star: Eight-pointed silver star mounted on Maltese cross in blue and white enamel, each of the arms finished with two ball finials, Serbian double-eagles with shields in each corner, obverse oval centerpiece shows distinctive iconography of St. Sava surrounded by an inscription in blue enamel, 82.1 mm, near mint condition. Housed in the original blue case, very fine condition.
Footnote: The Order of St. Sava was instituted on 23 January, 1883 by Milan I of Serbia. It was awarded to nationals and foreigners for meritorious achievements in the field of religion, education, science and the arts as well as for social and relief work. The order was abolished in 1945 with the proclamation of the People’s Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the end of the monarchy. It continues as a dynastic order, with appointments currently made by Alexander, Crown Prince of Yugoslavia.
