Description
(Orden del Mérito Aeronáutico). Instituted in 1945. Attributed to Lieutenant Colonel D. Carlos Baron Maldonado. In bronze gilt with red, white and blue enamels, mounted to an eight-pointed silver star base, each star point with five dual-faceted rays, unmarked, measuring 70.8 mm (w) x 69.8 mm (h), ornate vertical pinback flanked by dual stays, some residue on the white enamelled arms at 9 and 12 o'clock, the enamels themselves intact, near extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, pine green simulated cracked leather-look exterior, label taped in place to the lid inscribed "MERITO AERONAUTICO 1a Clase / TENIENTE CORONEL D. CARLOS BARON MALDONADO" (Aeronautical Merit / Lieutenant Colonel D. Carlos Baron Maldonado), inside lid in white satin and maker marked "Establecimientos Flandez Madrid" (Flandez Establishments Madrid), medal bed in black felt with two recessed areas, one for the Star and one for the missing rosette, measuring 97.5 mm (w) x 98.5 (h) x 34.5 mm (d), wear evident on the strap incorporating the snap closure, case also near extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Aeronautical Merit was established on November 30, 1945 by the chief of state, Francisco Franco. It was amended in 1976, 1995, 2003 and 2007, the name ultimately changed to the Cross of Aeronautical Merit. It is Spain's military award for gallantry or merit in the air and can be made in war or at times of peace. It is awarded to members of the Spanish Armed Forces, Guardia Civil or civilians. It was originally awarded in three classes and a cross in silver for non-commissioned ranks, but in 1995 it lost the rank of an order of merit and was reduced to two and the number of categories extended to four. The version with White Distinction under Franco was awarded for actions, deeds or distinguished service during missions of ordinary or extraordinary service in the armed forces or in connection with defense of the country.
