(Orden al Mérito Militar). Instituted 1864 by Queen Isabella II. White Distinction. Type I. Restoration period issue. An enameled white Greek cross in bronze gilt, with obverse centre depicting an enameled Spanish coat of arms, reverse with enameled white centre bearing the letters “MM” (Military Merit), suspended by a typical of time period Spanish royal crown also in bronze gilt, measuring 39.46 mm (w) x 49.84 mm (h- inclusive of the crown), presenting replacement obverse medallion probably from Franco’s period, with minor stained white enamels, on original breast ribbon, extremely fine.

Footnote: The Order of Military Merit was instituted in Spain by Queen Isabel II on August 3, 1864. The Order was created to recognize military personnel for outstanding and meritorious actions during the performance of their duties either in time of war or peace.
