(Orden al Mérito Naval). Instituted 1866. Juan Carlos I (1975-2014). Type II. An eight-pointed silver star, with obverse centre in silver gilt depicting a white-enamelled Latin Cross, with superposed blue-enamelled anchor in silver gilt, surmounted red-enamelled Spanish Royal Crown and clasp also in silver gilt, alternating silver-gilded lions and castles in each quadrant, reverse with typical time of period pin assembly and dual stays, measuring 62.97 mm (w) x 62.70 mm (h), with minor loss of white enamels, near to mint.
Footnote: The Order of Naval Merit was established in Spain by the Queen Isabel II on August 3, 1866. It was founded to recognize the Spanish Navy force which was taking part in many overseas battles at that time. The Order also recognized civil and commercial ships who served to Spanish Navy.
The Order is currently conferred upon members of the Spanish Naval Forces, Civil Guard, civilians, and foreigners for meritorious and gallant actions within the sphere of naval service.
The White Division is awarded in recognition of meritorious service during missions, or services led by the Armed Forces, and connected to the defense of the nation.
