Description
(Real y Muy Distinguida Orden de Carlos III). Instituted September 19, 1771 by King Charles III. Isabell II (1833-1870). Grand cross in 18Kt. Gold, presenting a white enamelled Maltese cross with ball finials and detailed Gold borders, with a smaller blue enamelled Maltese cross in each arm, a fleur-de-lis in each quadrant, the obverse medallion presents a superimposed hand-painted standing figure of the virgin Mary standing on a cloud in white enamel with a blue enamelled wrap detailed with tiny gold stars, on a gold field with etched rays and a blue enamelled oval border, the reverse medallion presents the cypher of Charles III on a blue enamelled field, surrounded by a white enamelled ring inscribed VIRTUTI ET MERITO (Virtue and Merit), the cross is surmounted by a laurel wreath in matted gold with a blue bow at 6 o’clock, measures 41.25mm (w) x 63.57mm (h – inclusive of wreath and integral suspension), weighs 19.3 grams, worn on a replacement Gold ring, enamel damage to the blue enamelled in the 3 o’clock arm and the blue enamelled bow on the laurel wreath, in overall very fine condition.
Accompanied by a full-length Grand Cross Sash in blue and white watered silk.
Footnote: The Royal and Distinguished Order of Charles III was established by King Carlos III/Charles III of Spain on September 19, 1771, to mark the occasion of the birth of his grandson Carlos V/Charles V, future heir of the Spanish thrown. It was dedicated to Immaculate Conception and was confirmed by Pope Clement XIV on February 21, 1772. Originally, it was awarded to individuals who had displayed actions that enhanced the prestige and goals of the Spanish crown. Currently, the Order is conferred upon Spanish and foreign citizens for extremely meritorious domestic and foreign service to Spain.
