Vatican. A Pontifical Equestrian Order of Saint Sylvester, Knight Commander

(Ordo Sancti Silvestri Papae). Instituted in 1841. In silver gilt, a white enameled Maltese cross, the obverse centerpiece bearing an image of Saint Sylvester, surrounded by the inscription SANC. SILVESTER. P. M., reverse bearing the papal insignia, surrounded by the dates MDCCCXLI MCMV, measuring 62.4 mm (h) x 60 mm (w), original neck ribbon, enamels intact, extremely fine. Accompanied by the Order’s miniature, in silver gilt, measuring 16 mm (h) x 13 mm (w), extremely fine. All housed in a red hard shell case, marked TANFANI & BERTARELLI ROMA, the clasp does not close, fine.

It was established in 1841 and is intended to honor Catholic lay people who are actively involved in the life of the Church, particularly as it is exemplified in the exercise of their professional duties and mastership of the different arts.
