(Orden al Mérito Militar). Instituted 1864. King Alfonso XIII Issue. A delicate and sparse four armed cross miniature, with arms consisting of clusters of finely cut synthetic diamonds framed by a delicate Gold structure, with typical Gold bar on the 12 o’clock arm, obverse centre featuring an enameled handmade period Spanish coat of arms, surmounted by beautifully executed Royal crown, which is adorned also by cluster of synthetic cut brilliant diamonds, plain reverse with an enameled red central medallion with gilt inscription MM, suspended by an ornate ring suspension presenting diamonds of different sizes, on an original knight’s ribbon, measuring 11.62 mm (w) x 21.27 mm (h - inclusive of royal crown), weighting 2.0 grams, light contact, otherwise an extraordinary piece in very good condition.
Footnote: The Order of Military Merit was instituted by Queen Isabel II on August 3, 1864. It was established to recognize either Spanish or foreign military personnel in recognition of outstanding and meritorious actions in time of war or peace. The Order was originally awarded in two categories; White Distinction and Red Distinction. The decorations with White Distinction (white enamels) were awarded for distinguished services in peacetime, while the decorations with Red Distinction (red enamels) were awarded for courage and effective actions in combat.
