(Kaijō Saigai Kyūjo Kyōkai Kōrōshō). Instituted in late 1923. A circular silver medal, the obverse with a central depiction of two figures attempting to stay afloat on a sinking vessel, the reverse inscribed “Sea Disaster Rescue Society Merit Medal” in Japanese characters, on a single-toe suspension bar for suspension from its period-original ribbon, unmarked, measuring 31.9 mm in diameter, in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The “Japanese Sea Disaster” refers to an earthquake that occurred on May 26, at 11:59:57 local time (02:59:57 UTC) in the Sea of Japan about 100 km west of the coast of Noshiro. It had a magnitude of 7.8 on the moment magnitude scale with waves exceeding 10 meters (33 ft) in some areas.
