4 Clasps - CAPE COLONY, PAARDEBERG, DRIEFONTEIN, JOHANNESBURG (7103 Pte H. SMETHURST, Rl CANDN: REGt). Naming is officially impressed in small capitals. Original ribbon, edge nicks, bruised, light contact, better than very fine.
Footnote: Henry Smethurst was born in Victoria, British Columbia and signed his Agreement for Military Service in South Africa paper as a Private (7103), enlisting on October 20, 1899 at Victoria, at the age of 25, naming his next-of-kin as his mother, Martha Smethurst, stating that he belonged to a militia (5th Regiment, Garrison Artillery), that he was Single, that his religion was Church of England and that his trade was that of Tinsmith. He disembarked at Cape Town, South Africa on November 20, 1899 and served in the South Africa theatre with the 2nd Special Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment. He was discharged as "time expired" on December 25, 1900. Smethurst is confirmed on the roll for the Queen's South Africa Medal with four clasps: Cape Colony, Paardeberg, Driefontein and Johannesburg, and had his medal delivered to him in Victoria on October 1, 1901.
