Description
This Canadian flag is screen-printed in red ink on white nylon, with a white nylon panel stitched in place as a hoist sleeve on the left side, the flag featuring the signature of Captain Wayne Johnston, founder of the Wounded Warriors Fund, along with the signatures of thirty-five other members of the Canadian Forces stationed overseas with him, all in black ink, manufacturer stamped "CANADA / 90 cm x 180 cm / CAN/CGSB-98.1-2003 / 2007" on the hoist sleeve, with a white nylon cord fed through the hoist sleeve, the cord with a wooden knot inserted through a loop at the top and secured in place by a metal clip, the opposite end of the cord protruding from the bottom and looped, with two metal clips securing the loop in place, measuring 1,800 mm (w) x 900 mm (h), extremely fine. Accompanied by a reproduction colour photograph of the group of Canadian Forces soldiers, with the mountains of Afghanistan in the background, measuring 270 mm (w) x 140 mm (h), the flag and photograph housed in a wooden-framed box with sliding glass viewing pane, the box with a swing lock securing the glass pane in place, measuring 340 mm (w) x 330 mm (h) x 63 mm (d), also extremely fine.
Footnote: Captain Wayne Johnston is from Whitby, Ontario and was a Reserve Captain in the Canadian Forces. In 2006, as the result of his duties as an assisting officer assigned to severely wounded Canadian Forces sent from Afghanistan to recover in Germany, Captain Johnston was motivated to found the nationally acclaimed charity, The Sapper Mike McTeague Wounded Warriors Fund (www.woundedwarriors.ca), a charity that has raised over $600,000 (as of 2009) for soldiers who have suffered physical and psychological injuries. An assisting officer helps the families of severely wounded or killed soldiers through the difficult times that lie ahead. While at the German hospital, Captain Johnston provided comfort to Sapper Mike McTeague, who was severely injured in a roadside suicide bomb in Afghanistan. The fund began because Captain Johnston noticed that Canadian troops at the German hospital had very little in the way of personal items and he wanted to provide these troops with something to take their minds off their pain and suffering. The funds raised go directly toward soldiers recovering in Germany; funding Segway mobility devices to Canadian Forces members, to help amputee soldiers overcome one of the final hurdles in their rehabilitation; funding assistance toward mental health and operational stress injuries; funding for homeless Veterans and individual support to Canadian Forces members and their families whenever and wherever needed. Johnston served as the national repatriation officer from 2008, helping the families of Forces members killed or severely wounded in action. “It was the best thing I’ve ever done as a human being, let alone as a soldier.” By 2010, he had been on duty at CFB Trenton, as a Repatriation Officer, to receive the body of every Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan. At the end of each repatriation ceremony, Johnston sent them on their final journey down the Highway of Heroes (Highway 401) to the coroner’s office in Toronto. Johnston described every Remembrance Day as a "train wreck", reflecting on the names and photos of the 158 Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan.
