Description
Description
Acquired directly from the family, this grouping belonged to a Canadian Chaplain who served with front line troops through the Italian campaign and into NW Europe. The name of the owner will be disclosed to the auction winner.
1. Canadian Chaplain's Service Officer's Cap: this fine quality cap has a 45 mm wide purple wool band, with the body of the cap fabricated from a black wool, in the traditional flat top design with raised peak. The front is adorned with a 33.5 mm (w) x 44 mm (h) Canadian Chaplain Service Cap Badge, composed of two pieces, the Chaplain's insignia in gilt metal with purple enamels, mounted to a silvered cross base fronting a gilt wreath composed of oak leaves and laurel leaves, along with being surmounted by the King's crown. The black patent leather visor has a black two-piece patent leather strap resting along the top edge, with two length adjustment sliders, held in position via brass buttons bearing the Canadian Army insignia, the insignia illustrating crossed swords and three maple leaves, with the King's crown above and "CANADA" below. The underside of the visor has a hunter green synthetic finish, the visor itself very stiff. The 45 mm wide sweatband is fabricated from a pecan brown leather, with the two ends held together at the rear by a white ribbon which is finished in a bow-tie, incorporating a "7 1/4" size label nearby. The front of the sweatband over the visor has an additional reinforcing patch of synthetic deerskin leather stitched to the leather sweatband, aiding in restricting sweat from the wearer's forehead. The sidewalls and dome are lined in emerald green felt, the dome covered with a semi-transparent moisture-resistant fabric shield with a manufacturer's label affixed to the underside of the covering inscribed "Ascot Clothes TORONTO", the cap measuring 250 mm in width x 250 mm in depth x 100 mm in height. It exhibits moderate soiling in the black wool on the exterior, crazing in the black patent leather on the strap resting upon the visor, with extensive cracking and soiling present on the moisture-resistant shield, along with light soiling on the leather sweatband and the attached synthetic deerskin leather patch. However, it continues to exhibit smooth quality in the wool, plus quality workmanship, intact stitching, maintaining its original period look and is free of mothing, As worn.
2. Uniform Leather Belt: waist belt with an upper bearing a cinnamon brown finish, the majority of the underside with a raw look and incorporating a lacquered smooth-finished leather patch stitched in place on the left end, each of the smooth-finished pieces displaying an intricate design, with brass fittings that includes a dual-prong buckle, post, hook and four u-shaped loops on the left end, the right end with three rows of five holes each for length adjustment, the middle row of five holes slotted, measuring 55 mm in width x 1,180 mm in length. Attached to one of the u-shaped loops is a shoulder strap with a two-piece construction, with a sienna brown upper and raw underside, the strap with a single-prong buckle and a single row of seven holes for length adjustment, the strap with two leather loops and brass post, the far end of the shoulder strap with a slotted hole for placement upon the brass post, the shoulder strap measuring 32 mm in width a 100 mm in length. Some greening evident on the brass fittings on both straps.
3. Communion Wafer Container: in silver, two pieces consisting of a lid and base, cross within a circle engraved on the lid, measuring 41.5 mm in diameter x 15.7 mm in height, one small discolouration mark on the lid, spotting on the underside of the base.
Better than very fine.
