United States. A Lot of Medals

1. A Navy Good Conduct Medal. In bronze, obverse centerpiece shows a ship at sea, encircled by a knotted rope around which is inscribed UNITED STATES NAVY, the centerpiece is superimposed on an anchor and enclosed by a chain, along the upper contour of the reverse medal are the words FIDELITY ZEAL OBEDIENCE, centerpiece engraving reads ANDREW ARHUR TOTH 1037, on original red ribbon with 1941 clasp, 33 mm, extremely fine condition. 

Footnote: The Good Conduct Medal is one of the oldest military awards of the United States Armed Forces. The Navy Good Conduct Medal is the oldest Good Conduct Medal, dating back to 26 April 1869. There have been four versions of the medal, this one being the last one.

3.A Navy Good Conduct Medal. 4.A Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. In bronze, obverse centerpiece shows a soldier, encircled by a knotted rope around which is inscribed UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS, the centerpiece is superimposed on an anchor and enclosed by a chain, along the upper contour of the reverse medal are the words FIDELITY ZEAL OBEDIENCE, centerpiece engraving reads No. 86685 CLAYTON W COX. 1ST ENLISTMENT 1925-1929, including the rifle suspension 40 mm (h) x 32 mm (w), on original ribbon with U.S Marine Corps clasp, light wear on reverse, very fine condition. 

Footnote: The Good Conduct Medal is one of the oldest military awards of the United States Armed Forces. The Marine corps’ variant of the medal was established in 1896. 

5.An Air Force Good Conduct Medal. In bronze, obverse center bears an eagle perched upon a sword resting on a book, surrounded by the relief inscription EFFICIENCY HONOR FIDELITY, reverse features a star above a scroll (meant for name engraving), surrounded by the words FOR GOOD SERVICE and two laurel and oak sprigs, numbered 4165 on the edge, on original ribbon with pinback, 32 mm, includes small clasp, very fine condition. 

Footnote: The Good Conduct Medal is one of the oldest military awards of the United States Armed Forces. The Air Force’s variant of the medal was established in 1963. 

6. A Dominican Campaign Medal. Bronze medal, obverse inscription reads DOMINICAN CAMPAIGN 1916, the reverse bears an eagle perched upon an anchor with sprigs of laurel in its claws, flanked by the words FOR SERVICE, inscribed above the eagle is UNITED STATES NAVY,  32 mm, on original ribbon, some tears on ribbon, otherwise extremely fine condition. 

Footnote: The Dominican Campaign Medal was instituted on 29 December 1921. To be awarded the Dominican Campaign Medal, a serviceman must have performed active military duty in the Dominican Republic between May 5 and December 4, 1916.

7.An Indian Campaign Medal. Bronze, obverse bears the relief image of an Indian on horseback, surrounded by the words INDIAN WARS, reverse bears an eagle above the words FOR SERVICE, the upper contour of the medal bears the words UNITED STATES ARMY, engraved BRONZE MEDALLIC ART CO., on original red ribbon with black stripes, 33 mm, very fine condition. 

Footnote: The Indian Campaign Medal was instituted on 12 October 1907. The medal was retroactively awarded to any soldier of the U.S. Army who had participated in the American Indian Wars against the Native Americans between 1865 and 1891.

8. A West Indie Naval Campaign Medal. In bronze, the obverse bears the relief profile of William T. Sampson, surrounded by US NAVAL CAMPAIGN WEST INDIES 1898, flanked by the words WILLIAM T. SAMPSON on the left, COMMANDER IN CHIEF on the right, reverse shows an engraving of a Navy officer, Sailor, and Marine standing on a black engraved with the text SANTIAGO DE CUBA JULY 3, on a striped ribbon in red and blue, extremely fine condition. 

Footnote: The West Indies Naval Campaign Medal, also called the Sampson Medal or Medal Commemorating Naval Engagements in the West Indies, is a commemorative medal authorized by Congress in 1901 for combat operations during the Spanish-American War. 

9.A Yangtze Service Medal. In bronze, the obverse bearing a ship at sea with the inscription YANGTZE SERVICE, the reverse bearing an eagle perched upon an anchor with sprigs of laurel in its claws, flanked by the words FOR SERVICE, inscribed above the eagle is UNITED STATES NAVY, engraved BRONZE MEDALLIC ART CO., on the edge, on the original ribbon, 33 mm, medium wear on obverse and reverse, in very fine condition. 

Footnote: The Yangtze Service Medal is awarded for service in the Yangtze River Valley between September 3, 1926 and December 31, 1932, a period of significant unrest in the region. The decoration may also be awarded for those military service members who served on permanent duty in Shanghai, China, provided such service was in direct support of landing operations in the Yangtze River Valley 

10. An American Defense Service Medal. Obverse shows Victory bearing a shield in her left hand and raising a sword in her right, along the upper edge of the contour are the words AMERICAN DEFENSE, reverse reads FOR SERVICE DURING THE LIMITED EMERGENCY PROCLAIMED BY THE PRESIDENT ON SEPTEMBER 8, 1939 OR DURING THE UNLIMITED EMERGENCY PROCLAIMED BY THE PRESIDENT ON MAY 27, 1941, above a seven-leafed spray of laurel, on the original yellow ribbon with stripes, bronze ‘A’ pinned to the ribbon, evidence of oxidation on the medal, 32 mm, very fine condition. 

Footnote: The American Defense Service Medal was instituted on 28 June 1941. The medal was intended to recognize those military service members who had served on active duty between September 8, 1939, and December 7, 1941.

11. A Women’s Army Corps Service Medal. Bronze medal, obverse bears the side profile of the goddess Athena facing left, superimposed on one sword and one sprig of laurel, inscription reads WOMEN’S ARMY CORPS, reverse bears a scroll with the words FOR SERVICE IN THE WOMEN’S ARMY AUXILIARY CORPS, on green ribbon with yellow stripes on the ends, wear to the obverse and reverse, 31mm, fine condition. 

Footnote: The Women’s Army Corps Service Medal was instituted on 29 July 1943 and was intended to recognize the service of women to the Army during the Second World War. 

12. GAR Medal For Syracuse N.Y. 1905 Medal. Square shaped, obverse bears the profile of a man surrounded by a red enameled ring with the words 39TH ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT SYRACUSE NY JUNE 21-22 1905, above are the enameled letters G, A, R, on original ribbon with gold-lettered words DELEGATE, 43 mm (h) x 37 mm (w), very fine condition.
