Instituted in 1932. Heart-shaped medal, obverse bearing the profile of George Washington on a purple enameled background, surrounded by a gold border, center top bearing a shield with the coat of arms of Washington between sprays of green leaves, reverse inscribed FOR MILITARY MERIT ROGER WINEGARDEN, on original purple medal, 47.4 mm (h) x 35.2 mm (w), evidence of wear on obverse and scratches on reverse, very fine condition.
Footnote: Originally established in 1782 by George Washington as the Badge of Military Merit, the Purple Heart Medal was reinstated on the 200th Anniversary of Washington’s birth, the 22 February 1932. The medal is awarded to those wounded or killed in any action against an enemy of the United States or as a result of an act of any such enemy or opposing armed forces. The Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to U.S. military members. This medal was awarded on 16 April 1935 to Roger Winegarden; he was wounded in action on 4 August 1918.
