In solid Gold, a rare Cogswell Medal, the obverse presenting the left facing portrait of Cogswell, surrounded by the inscription EX DONO GULIELMI LAMBERT COGSWELL (“FROM THE DONATION OF WILLIAM LAMBERT COGSWELL”), the reverse bears the coat of arms of the school and the inscription ACAD. BARVIC: IN REPUB: MAINE: COND. 1791., the rim has been engraved with the date MDCCCIXXXVI (1886) and SADIE R. RICKER, measuring 36.15mm (w) x 59.00mm (h – inclusive of integral suspension ring), weighs 44.1 grams, 22ct, edge knock on rim near date engraving, small scratches, otherwise in extremely fine condition.
Contained in original case of issue composed of red leatherette exterior, the interior presents a white silk lid marked WYON 287 REGENT STREET LONDON, the base features a dark red velvet raised and recessed medal bed, measures 78mm (w) x 95mm (l) x 20mm (d), hinge and clasp functional, in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: This school award medal was produced for the Berwick Academy in Maine. The dies were created by the Wyon firm in London and struck in Gold at the U.S Mint. The medals were awarded once per year from 1870 until the 1940s.
