Instituted in 1908. In bronze, the obverse features two naval vessels engaged in combat, the upper contour of the medal bears the words THE CIVIL WAR, the exergue the dates 1861-1865, the reverse features a spread eagle resting upon an anchor with draped chain, over the words FOR SERVICE, the upper contour of the medal bears the words UNITED STATES NAVY, impressed numbered 2496 on the edge of the medal, on original ribbon with broach, very fine condition.
Footnote: The decoration was awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who had served in the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865. This medal is the Navy and Marine Corps version.
