In bronze, obverse illustrating Simpson and his donkey carrying a wounded soldier to safety, with a laurel wreath above the word "ANZAC" on a scroll at the base, reverse illustrating a map in relief of Australia and New Zealand superimposed by the Southern Cross, with a wreath of fern leaves and a scroll engraved with the recipient's name "G ANDRWES" at the base, measuring 50.3 mm (w) x 75.7 mm (h), extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, inside lid lined in violet stain, spring-loaded recessed medal bed in violet felt, enabling the medallion to be raised for presentation, case also extremely fine.
Footnote: The Anzac Commemorative Medallion was instituted in 1967 by the Australian and New Zealand governments jointly, to all surviving veterans who had served on the Gallipoli Peninsula, or in direct support of the operations from close off shore, at any time during the period from the first ANZAC Day in April 1915 to the date of final evacuation in January 1916. Next-of-kin, or other entitled persons, are entitled to receive the medallion on behalf of their relatives, if the medallion has not been issued previously. It was not designed to be worn.
