South Africa. South Africa And The Transvaal War (Seven Volumes)

Original six volume set with supplementary Volume VII. Hardcover, khaki cloth cover, front cover with an illustration of two cavalrymen, entitled "South Africa and the Transvaal War" by Louis Creswicke, author of "Roxane", etc., "with numerous illustrations and maps", published by T.C. & E.C Jack of Edinburgh, Scotland, printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. of Edinburgh & London, at the Ballantyne Press in 1900, 1901 and 1902. The books detail a contemporary history of the Second Boer War (AKA Boer War, Anglo-Boer War, or South African War), fought from October 11, 1899 to May 31, 1902 between the British Empire and two independent Boer states, the South African Republic (Republic of Transvaal) and the Orange Free State, over the Empire's influence in South Africa. The trigger of the war was the discovery of diamonds and gold in the Boer states. Initial Boer attacks were successful, and although British reinforcements later reversed these, the war continued for years with Boer guerrilla warfare, until harsh British counter-measures including a scorched earth policy brought the Boers to terms. Each volume begins with a List of Contents, followed by a List of Illustrations (coloured plates, full-page plates, full-page portraits, maps and engravings) and a Chronological Table. Volume I with an Introduction, each volume detailing the participation of the British and its colonial allies, five of the volumes concluding with an Appendix, Volume VII with Official Correspondence after the Battle of Colenso and a list of twenty-four recipients of the Victoria Cross, conferred by King Edward VII following the Appendix. Includes: Volume I - From the Foundation of Cape Colony to the Boer Ultimatum of 9th Oct. 1899, with six chapters, published in 1900; Volume II - From the Commencement of the War to the Battle of Colenso, 15th Dec. 1899 , with six chapters, published in 1900; Volume III - From the Battle of Colenso, 15th Dec. 1899, to Lord Roberts's Advance into the Free State, 12th Feb. 1900, with eight chapters, published in 1900; Volume IV - From Lord Roberts' Entry into the Free State to the Battle of Karree, with eight chapters, published in 1900; Volume V - From the Disaster at Koorn Spruit to Lord Roberts's Entry into Pretoria, with nine chapters, published in 1901; Volume VI - From the Occupation of Pretoria to Mr. Kruger's Departure from South Africa, with a Condensed Account of the Guerilla War to March 1901, with eight chapters, published in 1901; Volume VII Supplementary - The Guerilla War. From, February 1901 to the Conclusion of Hostilities. The Development of Peace Negotiations from February 13, 1901, to May 31, 1902, with eighteen chapters, published in 1902. Volumes I, II, III and V contain 208 pages each, Volumes IV and VI each with 224 pages, Volume VII with 232 pages, printed in black ink on an off-white paper stock, with multiple inserts of black and white or colour plates, along with maps, some of which are in a fold-out format, the plates and maps printed on a satin-finished white paper stock, the seven volumes together weighing 6.5 kilograms, each book measuring 175 mm (w) x 251 mm (h) x 27 mm (d), the previous owner's name inscribed in ink on the inside front cover of Volume I, the covers having experienced soiling and extensive wear, most of which with separation evident on the spine, a few pages have come away from the binding, the majority of the pages and their inserts remain unaffected. Good.
