The book is a record of the circumstances leading to the award of the medals. As stated on the dust jacket: "The King's Police Medal was introduced in 1909 to recognise, among other things, bravery by police and fire service personnel whilst in the course of their duties. Often referred to as the "Policeman's V.C.", this is the first unified record of the stories behind the award of the medals. This unique publication is the result of many years of dedicated research by the author, whose interest in the subject was conceived whilst he was in the police service. The medal was available to members of recognised Fire Brigades until 1954, when a separate medal was instituted, and there are over 70 such personnel, whose bravery was rewarded. The book contains over 300 photographs of recipients which are shown alongside their stories, to enrich the value of this book. References to London Gazette entries, and to where documents can be researched in the Public Records Office are also shown for the benefit of those wishing to undertake further research. It begins with a Foreword by E.N. Pain, C.B.E., Q.P.M., H.M.I.C., President of the Police History Society and Commandant of the Police Staff College. This is followed by a Dedication, a Table of Contents, an Introduction and an Acknowledgements. It is divided into six sections, each one done as a chronological list of the recipients, along with a story and explanation as to how they won the medal: 1 - King's Police Medal - Edward VII Issue; 2 - King's Police Medal - George V Issue; 3 - King's Police Medal - George V and VI Issue with 'For Gallantry' on the Reverse; 4 - King's Police and Fire Service Medal - George VI Issue; 5 - King's Police and Fire Service Medal - Posthumous Award; 6 - Queen's Police Medal - Posthumous Awards. It concludes with four Appendices (A - Details of the Royal Warrants; B - Letter to Mrs. Herrett, 1st November 1928; C - Police Report re. Barton and Mussell 10th May 1913; D - Alphabetical List of Police Forces and Fire Brigades, and the number of medals awarded) and a fourteen page Index (incorporating an alphabetical list of recipients of King's/Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry). The book contains 268 pages, printed in black ink, on a white paper stock, page xiii illustrating three ribbons and two medals in colour, printed in four-colour inks, on a satin-finished white paper stock, measuring 203 mm (w) x 281 mm (h) x 21 mm (d). Light scuffing evident on the dust jacket but the cover and pages within remain pristine. Near extremely fine.
