Description
Hardcover, the covers designed in a reddish marbled swirl pattern, with a maroon leather binding, the text on the spine in gold-coloured ink, entitled "The Military General Service Medal Roll 1793-1814", edited by A.L.T. Mullen (with his photo on page 4), copyrighted and published by the London Stamp Exchange Ltd. of London in 1990, printed and bound by Antiny Rowe Ltd. of Chippenham, ISBN 0 948130 92 X. Prior to 1939, medal rolls were nor readily available to the collector to study, though the problem no longer exists for those able to use the excellent facilities of the Public Record Office at Kew. This book is much more than that, as the author has "embellished the roll with small notes and references, which have been culled over the years from a variety of sources". It begins with a Preface, followed by the bulk of the book, which consists of the full listing of the recipients of the Military General Service Medal, which includes: Staff Officers, 1st and 2nd Life Guards, Royal Horse Guards, five Dragoon Guards units, four Dragoons units, sixteen Light Dragoons units, Staff Corps of Cavalry, three Foot Guards units, ninety-one Regiments of Foot, Royal Staff Corps, seven West India Regiments, two Ranger units, the Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Royal Malta Infantries, various King's German Legion units, the Royal Artillery, the Royal Engineers, the Royal Sappers and Miners, the Royal Marines, the Militias of Upper and Lower Canada, the Indian Department, and many, many more regiments, corps and units. Each listing states the recipient's name and rank, the clasp(s) issued with the medal, and complemented with small notes and references about the individual, if available. It concludes with a List of Abbreviations and a two page Index. The book contains 728 pages of text, printed in black ink, on a thick white paper stock, gold leaf on the edges of the pages on all three sides, weighing 1.8 kilograms, measuring 215 mm (w) x 307 mm (h) x 47 mm (d). It exhibits few small nips in the maroon leather binding, otherwise, the book is free of scuffs and marks, the pages remaining pristine. An invaluable resource to historians and collectors, along with being an easily accessible record for the descendants of the recipients. Near extremely fine.
