MacKinnon, late 25th King's Own Borderers, formerly 72nd Highlanders and Sydney L. Shadbolt of the Inner Temple, Barrister-At-Law, dedicated to Field-Marshal H.R.H. The Duke of Cambridge, Commanding-in-Chief, originally printed and published in 1882 by J.B. Hayward & Son of London, reprinted in 1973 by Eyre & Spottiswoode Limited at Grosvenor Press in Portsmouth, ISBN 0 903754 02 9. As stated on the dust jacket: "In January 1879, Victorian Britain was horrified by the news of the disaster at Isandhlwana, where the Zulus surprised and massacred a British Army column of over 1,300 men. The defeat was followed by the heroic defence of the mission station at Rorke's Drift where no less than eleven Victoria Crosses were won. After minor setbacks, British columns rapidly advanced into Zululand and after fighting a number of major battles, occupying strategic positions en route, they subsequently fought and won the decisive battle of Ulundi, where the real military power of the Zulu nation was ended forever. This volume contains: cabinet photographs and biographical notices of sixty-two officers of the British Army and Navy who lost their lives during the campaign, including that of Lieutenant Thirkill of the 88th Regiment, which did not appear in the original edition of 1880; summaries of all the British Regiments and Naval Brigade in the field; separate records of almost every British officer engaged; accurate accounts of the various engagements; maps etc. As with its companion volume "The Afghan Campaign of 1878-1880" modern printing techniques have made it possible to present this volume in a reduced format. This smaller size is more convenient for reference and storage." It begins with a Preface, followed by a List of Contents and a thirty-two page Introduction. The bulk of the book entails Portraits and Biographical Notices of the Sixty-Two Officers of the British Army who Lost Their Lives in the Zulu War. It concludes with Records of the Services of Every Officer of the British Army who was Engaged, and a two-page Index. The book contains 386 pages of text, printed in black ink, on a semi-coated white paper stock, with two maps on a white coated stock (Zululand showing the Movements of the Columns and Divisions in the Field inserted facing page 1, and Action at Isandhlwana inserted facing page 11), measuring 203 mm (w) x 272 mm (h) x 27 mm (d). It exhibits foxing along the top edge of the pages, however, the pages within remain unaffected. Near extremely fine.
