Hardcover, black cloth cover, with dust jacket, the text on the spine in silver-coloured ink, entitled "The White Ribbon: A Medallic Record of British Polar Exploration", by Neville Wright Poulsom, copyrighted by the author in 1968, first published in December 1968, printed by Penna Press of St, Albans, Hertfordshire, England. As noted on the dust jacket: "This unique book is an account of the Arctic and Antarctic Expeditions between 1818 and 1961, whose members received the award of the Arctic or Polar Medal. A description is given of each expedition from 1818, together with details of the medals and the names of all the men to whom an award has been made for polar exploration and scientific research, up to the end of 1966. The book is a valuable work of reference for all those interested in the polar regions." In addition, as stated by the author in the Preface: "This book has been written for those interested in Polar exploration and collecting medals. In listing the recipients of the Arctic Medals of 1818-55 and 1875-76, it is possible that the list may be incomplete; the lists have been compiled from all known sources but their accuracy cannot be guaranteed. At the same time it is possible where the same name is shown twice in the alphabetical list of recipients that it may be one and the same man. A brief description has been given of the expeditions for which participants have been awarded the medals. Two notable expeditions for which did not receive any recognition by the award of a medal were Sir James Clark Ross's Antarctic Expedition of 1839-43 and Dr. Bruce's Scottish Antarctic Expedition of 1903-04." It begins with a Foreword by Sir Vivian Fuchs dated June 1, 1968, followed by a Table of Contents, a Preface and an Acknowledgements. The book is divided into four chapters: 1 - The Arctic Medal 1818-55 (Description of the Medal; List of 28 Expeditions which received the Medal; List of Ships Referred To); 2 - The Arctic Medal 1875-76 (Description of the Medal; List of Both Expeditions which received the Medal); 3 - The Polar Medal 1904 (Dies of the Polar Medal; Description of the Medal; List of 20 Expeditions which received the Medal); 4 - The Royal Geographical Awards (Introduction; The Special Medal; The Royal Medal; The Special Awards). It concludes with eleven Appendices (1 - Medal Roll, by expeditions, of the Arctic Medal 1818-55; 2 - Alphabetical list of the recipients of the Arctic Medal 1818-55; 3 - Hudson Bay Company Officers and Men awarded the Arctic Medal 1818-55; 4 - Medal Roll, by expeditions, of the Arctic Medal 1875-76; 5 - Medal Roll, by expeditions, of the silver Polar Medal 1904 for the Antarctic; 6 - Medal Roll, by expeditions, of the silver Polar Medal 1904 for the Arctic; 7 - Medal Roll, by expeditions, of the bronze Polar Medal 1904 for the Antarctic; 8 - Alphabetical list of the recipients of the Polar Medal 1904; 9 - List of awards received by Sir Ernest Shackleton, Captain R.F. Scott, and Sir Vivian Fuchs; 10 - Copies of relevant "London Gazettes" authorising the award of the medals; 11 - Polar Medals of other Nations (Norway, South Africa, United States). The book contains 216 pages of text, printed in black ink, on an off-white paper stock, complemented by nine pages of black and white plates (frontispiece, plus two each between pages 32-33, 48-49, 64-65, 80-81), printed in black ink, on a coated white paper stock, plus maps of Antarctica and the Arctic on the inside front and back covers respectively, measuring 190 mm (w) x 252 mm (h) x 22 mm (d). The dust jacket exhibits wear along the edges and surface wear overall, and has protected the book well, as the contents and cover of the book remain pristine. Near extremely fine.
