Hardcover, colour photographs on the cloth-based front and back covers, entitled "Badges of the French Foreign Legion 1923-1989", by Philippe Bartlett, printed in France in the 4th Quarter of 1989, ISBN 2-950 4247. The book features badges commemorating the French Foreign Legion in various theatres of operation, including Africa and Indochina, among others. It begins with an Introduction, followed by a Table of Contents and a History of the Main Units (entailing: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Infantry Regiments; 13th Foreign Legion Half Brigade; 1st and 2nd Cavalry Regiments; 1st and 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiments). Over the next forty-eight pages (pages 12 through 59), the book features illustrations of 429 badges through the use of colour photographs, each of which are accompanied by an identification tag inscribed in French and English, the tags listing the date of issue, the badge's manufacturer, the official approval code used, whether it was a restrike and its rarity rating (on a scale of 1 to 5). It concludes with a Rarity Guide, a How to Date a French Badge by the Marking page, a one page Bibliography and a List of Badges Belonging to Four Contributors (thirty-eight in total, the author having contributed seven badges himself). The book contains 64 pages of text in French and English, with multiple key-lettered photographs, the text printed in black ink, the photographs printed in four-colour inks, on a white satin paper stock, measuring 215 mm (w) x 306 mm (h) x 12 mm (d). It exhibits slight undulation of the front cover, along with wear spots along the bottom edge of the back cover, the pages themselves remaining pristine. A terrific research book for the collector of French Foreign Legion badges spanning the period 1923 through 1989. Better than very fine.
