Description
Hardcover, with a laminated paper finish bearing photographs, entitled "The Queen Anne Pistol 1660-1780: A History of the English Turn-off Pistol", by John W. Burgoyne, published and printed in Canada by Museum Restoration Service of Bloomfield, Ontario and Alexandria Bay, New York in 2002, ISBN 0-88855-015-4. The purpose of this book is to fill a gap in the arms literature and to trace the development of the design and decoration of a uniquely English type of pistol known colloquially as the Queen Anne or, more correctly, as the turn-off pistol. This distinctive breech-loading arm was developed in the middle years of the seventeenth century but found popularity during the reign of the monarch (1702-1714) by whose name it is known. It continued to be made until about 1780. With a comprehensive text and almost 200 illustrations, the styles and decoration from the mid-seventeenth century, through the baroque and rococo designs imported from France that were adapted by English gunmakers, came to produce a particularly accurate and distinctive pistol. It begins with a Table of Contents, followed by an author's Foreword. The book is divided into four parts: Part 1: Origins and Design (I - Mechanical Characteristics; II - Continental Influence and the Huguenot Immigation; III - The Seventeenth century turn-off pistol; IV - The Queen Anne Pistol; V - The Baroque Style; VI - The Rococo Style; VII - The Truncated Form; VIII - Fixed Barrels; IX - Pocket Pistols; X - Boxlock Pistols; XI - Superimposed and Multi-shot Pistols); Part 2: Decoration and Silver Mountings (XII - Butt Caps; XIII - Side Plates; XIV - Escutcheons; XV - Wire Inlay; XVI - Carving); Part 3: Safety Features (XVII - Safety Mechanisms); Part 4: A Concluding Observation. It concludes with five Appendices (1 - Queen Anne Powder Testers; 2 - Some Comments on Barrel Wrenches; 3 - A List of Queen Anne Type Gunmakers; 4 - Glossary of Queen Anne Pistol Terms; 5 - Bore and Caliber) and Endnotes. The book contains 114 pages, printed in black ink, on a coated white paper stock, measuring 183 mm (w) x 262 mm (h) x 12 mm (d). Near extremely fine.
