Venezuela, Bolivarian Republic. An Order Of The Liberator, I Class Grand Cross Case, C.1900

(Orden del Libertador). Instituted in 1880. Case with a wooden framework, the exterior on five sides in a soft and supple azure blue velvetine that wraps around to the edges on both the lid and the base, the bottom in a finely textured black cloth, inside lid in white cotton, padded and maker marked in black ink with the "Gathmann Hnos (Hermanos)" insignia (Gathmann Brothers Watchmaking and Jewellers), base with a white cardboard insert and housing a raised platform with flip-up panel, the platform and the boxed area of the base in maroon felt, the platform incorporating a medal bed with recessed areas for the badge and the breast star, the latter slotted for its pin, with slotted areas for the rosettes flanking the recessed area for the badge, clasp closure on the front, hinged along the rear edge, measuring 115 mm in width x 230 mm in height x 62 mm in depth, with age discoloration evident on the azure blue velvetine, the finely textured black cloth on the bottom exhibiting wear on the two corners and the edge of the left side that exposes the wooden framework, extensive wear and loss present in the white cloth overlying the hinged area, very fine.

Footnote: The Order of the Liberator was instituted on September 14, 1880 and was discontinued in 2010, being replaced by the Order of the Liberators and Liberators of Venezuela. It was awarded for meritorious services to the country and the community, in six grades: Collar, Grand Cordon, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.
